‘Winter’, A Timelapse Of Water Freezing In The Cold, Shot Over 5 Years

'Winter', A Timelapse Of Water Freezing In The Cold, Shot Over 5 Years

Five years in the making, this is ‘Winter’, a timelapse video beautifully shot by filmmaker Jamie Scott over the course of five winter seasons in New York and Montreal, Canada; with up to six cameras and four sliders at a time. It features a lot of snow and natural water features freezing over time. Brrrrrr! The cold: I don’t like it. “Then why do you live somewhere that’s freezing four months of the year?” I ask myself that same question every day of winter. I seriously f*cked up somewhere though, that much is clear.

Man Rides Homemade Railcar Along Scenic Abandoned Tracks

Man Rides Homemade Railcar Along Scenic Abandoned Tracks

These are a couple videos of Ryan Randomness riding the homemade railcar he built along lengths of abandoned tracks in California, Arizona, and other parts of the American southwest. Admittedly, it looks like a good time. But maybe that has something to do with my fantasies of being a cowboy. Or of being Thomas the Tank Engine, it’s hard to say.

Homemade Tow-Behind Snowplow Easily Clears The Road

Homemade Tow-Behind Snowplow Easily Clears The Road

This is a video of what appears to be a homemade tow-behind snowplow doing its thing. Its thing being plowing snow, just to be clear. I’m not entirely sure what it’s made of, but if I had to guess, I’d say 100% ingenuity. Or a brick with a couple long blades extending from it at 45-degree angles. Is that damaging the road? Probably! Not that it could do much more damage to the roads around here, which are more pothole than road. You know that labyrinth game where you try to get the marble past all the holes? It’s like that. You have to carry four spares at all times and the guy who runs the local tire store owns a yacht.

Thanks to Brian A, who agrees that would suck to take to the shin.

Once Popular Men’s Names That Nobody Names Their Baby Anymore

Once Popular Men's Names That Nobody Names Their Baby Anymore

This is a chart detailing ten men’s names that were wildly fashionable in the early 20th century, but have since plunged in popularity. It’s like me in high school versus now. I’m kidding, I was never popular. There aren’t really any surprises on the list, presumably because parents today have enough sense to know that nobody is ever going to want to make love to an Elmer or Herbert. As a matter of fact, according to the Wikipedia article I just wrote, the last time an Elmer ever did the nasty was in February of 1949, to a Gertrude.

Horse Follows Human’s Lead, Makes Snow Angel

Horse Follows Human's Lead, Makes Snow Angel

This is a short clip of a horse who, after watching its human caretaker make a snow angel, decides to get in on the fun and make one of his own. Hey — you never know how fun something is until you try it for yourself. Now I’m addicted to planking! “Oh wow, 2011 just called…” OMG, gimme the phone! I want to tell my old dog Chloe that I love and miss her. “Well now I feel bad.” AS YOU SHOULD.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania SPCA Empties Shelter For 1st Time In 47 Years

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania SPCA Empties Shelter For 1st Time In 47 Years

In heartwarming news, the Adams County SPCA of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania successfully adopted out all their dogs and reunited all lost dogs with their owners for the first time in 47 years, leaving a completely empty kennel. That is fantastic news, and I would have adopted one of those dogs myself if my house wasn’t already full of hellhounds (actually precious angels).

Today is a great day for the Adams County SPCA! Two weeks ago our kennels were almost filled, now we don’t have any dogs in the building at all (we have 1 cat that came in as a stray a little bit ago)!! Our community stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time, it is a true miracle!

To say that we are beyond excited is an understatement! The staff and volunteers have worked VERY hard to take care of the animals in our care and to make sure they got adopted to the right home! This year we have adopted out 598 animals and reunited 125 strays with their owners!

We will be pulling animals from other shelters in PA next week in hopes of relieving some of their stress. Right now, we are going to enjoy this accomplishment!

I’ve never had anything but adopted dogs, and every single one has been absolutely perfect in their own way. Granted, they’ve been far from perfect in a lot of other ways, but I wouldn’t change a single one of them for the world. *Walter farts, growls at own butt* Life is good.

Thanks to JustA, who agrees adopted dogs come with extra love.
