This is a video featuring the late great astronomer Carl Sagan reading the popular excerpt from his 1994 book ‘Pale Blue Dot’, set to the classical music piece ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ by Arvo Pärt for extra poignancy. The original photo, which features earth as seen from a distance of some 3.7-billion miles, was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 in part thanks to Sagan, who was the one to sugggest the probe’s cameras be turned around for one last shot of earth as Voyager left the solar system. I’m always moved every time I see and listen to this. It really gets me thinking. Just not about anything good, unfortunately, and it’s a shame the photo didn’t capture a giant asteroid speeding towards that pale blue dot.
