Because some people feel the need (the need for speed — I typically only feel the need for an afternoon nap), this is a video from filmmaker Louis Skupien, who was taken for a high-speed ride along in an F-16 Viper jet by Major Anthony “Hash” Pipe (great call name) at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In the video they break the sound barrier (~767MPH), then proceed up to 1,300MPH (around Mach 1.6 at that altitude/air temperature). Everything looks surprisingly chill in the cockpit, presumably because they’re so far from earth (48,000 feet — 9 miles) there isn’t a lot of reference for speed. It’s just a bunch of clouds. And you know how I feel about clouds. “You can always spot one that looks like a dinosaur if you try hard enough.” And isn’t that what life is all about? “I don’t think so, no.” Dammit! Right when I think I have it all figured out.
