18-Year Old Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion

This is a video of the last 7-minutes of the 2024 World Chess Championship, in which 18-year old Gukesh Dommaraju of India defeats 32-year old Ding Liren of China after Liren make a fatal mistake with his rook, leaving his bishop trapped. Going into the game, the best of 14 finale was dead tied 6.5 – 6.5 (each had 2 wins and 9 half-point draws), and another draw would have resulted in tie-breaker rounds. Unfortunately for Liren, no tie-breaker was necessary and Dommaraju monopolized on the mistake, becoming the youngest World Chess Champion in history. Watching the video, I could feel all their feelings: the high-stakes stress followed by Liren’s excruciating anguish and Dommaraju’s weeping joy. It almost made me feel alive! Only almost though.
