The Arecibo Telescope, probably better known for its appearance in GoldenEye than for any of its scientific discoveries, made an unplanned crossing of the Rainbow Bridge on December 1st after several catastrophic cable failures dropped the telescope’s 900-ton receiver through the dish below. The collapse was captured on video both by the control tower, and a drone that was monitoring the cables when they snapped. It was a good radio telescope, and it will be missed.
