After garnering enough interest for production consideration on the LEGO Ideas website, LEGO is releasing an official Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone playset (links to LEGO product site) on January 1st to start the new year running(!). This is that playset. Featuring a respectable 1,125 pieces, the $70 set includes an iconic loop-de-loop, some enemies, a checkpoint, some power-ups and chaos emeralds, a bounce pad, and Dr. Robotnik. I just bought one for my niece, but if my sister doesn’t have one in the next two days I’m keeping it for myself.

Thanks to my dad, for supporting my interest in video games (and pinball) from a young age, and still to this day.

This is a video of musician Charles Berthoud (previously) playing an electric bass with its strings replaced with a cello’s. The result is beautiful, it almost sounds like a harp. Speaking of — have I told you I pay a woman dressed as an ancient Greek to play a large harp in my mansion’s foyer during regular waking hours (11AM to 7PM)? Well I was lying. It has always been a dream of mine though. 24/7 harp music in your foyer — that’s when you know you’ve really made it. Sure being able to pay rent on time would be a step in the right direction, but baby steps are for babies, I just want to take one giant leap to the harp thing and somebody feeding me peeled grapes. Now if you’ll excuse me *furiously scratching $20 lotto scratchers* come on, rent money, don’t let me down!

Because feats of the human spirit spirit come in all shapes and sizes, this is a video of Vietnamese duo Quoc Co and Quoc Nghiep quickly jaunting up 100 stairs at the Girona Cathedral in Spain with one balanced on the head of the other, on his own head. How about that! And they broke their own record with a new one of 53 seconds too. That’s just short of two steps per second! For reference, I would have collapsed on the first step with my partner on top of me, and we would both require immediate medical assistance and surgery. Me for a penis reduction, obviously.

This is a video of a large tabby cat making its way back home in high snow, regretting its decision to ever leave the warmth of home in the first place. I know that feeling. Honestly, I don’t know why I leave home. Everything I need is right here, or can be brought to the door with the use of my roommate’s credit card. Still, this reminds me of one early morning years ago in my more adventurous days when I was doing the walk of shame back to my apartment when I was prevented from crossing the road because there was a marathon happening. I had to stand there for twenty minutes pretending to be a light pole while passing runners commented on my unseasonal Christmas boxers.

This is some archival footage from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), featuring a 1985 news segment of skiers versus snowboarders. According to the quintessential 1980’s ski patroller seen above: “Quite a lot of them are uncooperative. Some of them had a little bit to drink and, uh, smart alecks. You go up and approach them in a very calm, collected manner and they they tend to lip you off. You ask them very nicely to leave, that they’re endangering the public and possibly themselves. And they they swear at you. They tell you to get lost mind your own business. So it’s quite a problem for us really.” Fascinating. I’ve never actually skied before but I used to snowboard quite a bit in high school. Then I broke my arm snowboarding. Then I broke it again skateboarding. Now I don’t do anything physical.

This is a short video of a marten (a small carnivorous mammal in the weasel family) who’s made quite the mess in a Germany grocery store while looking for an exit. Or, who knows, maybe he just came in to break a bunch of shit and run out but forgot he didn’t come in through the SÄFTE (JUICES) sign on the wall. I feel you, little marten. I remember one time in middle school I was so excited to egg a house on Halloween I must have already chucked a baker’s dozen before I realized it was my own house and I was still in the kitchen. I tried blaming it on my little sister but she wasn’t even crawling yet. You always take her side!
