This is a video of Dutch aerobatic pilot Narine Melkumjan during a training session in an Extra 330LX plane when the cockpit canopy slides open and shatters, leaving her exposed to the wild blue yonder and in desperate need of a quick landing. In her own words:
“…during my second training flight of that day, on a very hot summer day, the canopy of the Extra 330LX that I was flying opened in flight and shattered. As you can see from the video, it was a challenging experience that could have been avoided if I had made a proper visual check before taking off. The canopy locking pin had never gone into the locked position, and I failed to notice it during my checks.”
Always check your locking pins — that’s the lesson here. Personally, I would have double and triple checked my locking pins along with everything else, then, once I was convinced everything was in good working order, still not flown because I don’t have a death wish. Flying is unnatural, and if God wanted me to do it I would have born with a jetpack instead of a perfect ass.
