1993 — it seems like forever ago, doesn’t it? That’s because it was. 1993 is just as long ago from right now as 1981 is to the pyramids being built. You can quote me on that. This is a 1993 news report featuring customers reacting to Burger King now accepting credit cards. The man above thinks it might be convenient for families on vacation, but it likely won’t catch on day-to-day. Clearly this man does not own a crystal ball. Still, it’s wild to think you HAD to pay with cash before. And, before that, you had to trade shells or barter with your own craft. Wow!

An annual tradition at the Oregon Zoo, this is a compilation of a number of different animals all enjoying some delicious pumpkin, straight from the jack-o-lantern’s head. it was a fun video to watch, and if raw pumpkin were as delicious as these animals make it seem, maybe I wouldn’t have raw pumpkin vomit on my shirt right now. Jesus, do these animals even have taste buds?!

This is a video of Derek Muller of Veritasium discussing the mechanics of extreme breath holding while athlete Brandon Birchak is submerged in a tank of water the entire time, holding his breath for an astonishing 17 minutes (the world record is 24 minutes, 37 seconds). Damn! Five seconds and I get light headed and feel like I’m going to pass out. And often do.

It’s called the mammalian dive reflex. … The trigeminal nerve in our face detects the coolness of the water and triggers a series of responses. The heart beats slower, decreasing the rate at which blood, and hence, oxygen, are circulated around the body. Our blood vessels in our extremities constrict, confining blood to our vital organs and brain, ensuring we have enough oxygen to stay conscious.

Now I’m not saying I’m SUPER EVOLVED, but I’m pretty sure I’ve evolved past the mammalian dive reflex. My dive reflex is less lower heart rate and oxygen circulation, and more thrashing wildly in the water. “Is dying really that evolved?” Death is the only great adventure I have left. “Did you just quote Hook?” Bangarang!

This is a video of two intrepid explorers riding an iceberg down the river and enjoying some cold ones when they have to navigate their frozen craft under a bridge. Unfortunately for them, after successfully making it under the bridge, their boat immediately starts sinking like the Titanic. You should have exited at the bridge! Now you’re both Jack. Quick, throw me the necklace, I’ll throw you the whip!

Because spooky season is upon us, this is a video of a a Jeep spotted leaving a Wegmans supermarket with one of those 10-foot skeleton Halloween lawn decorations riding in the back. This is arguably the best use of one of those skeletons that I’ve seen. And, knowing the number of rabid Jeep fans that live around here, I assume I’ll see a lot of these this Halloween. Plus it’s a great excuse to not have to drive any friends around. Sorry, Mega Boner already called the backseat.

This is a video of real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield rating various space related movie scenes for realism. Movie include: ‘For All Mankind,’ ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Life,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon,’ ‘F9: The Fast Saga,’ ‘Space Cowboys’, ‘Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi’, and more. While discussing the realism (or lack thereof) in this movies, Chris mentions that in his 21 years of astronauting, he has never met anybody who has seen a UFO. So, if you were wondering whether Chris is part of the truth, or the coverup, the answer should be obvious. *shaking foil-helmeted head despondently* I expected more from a man of space.
