After performing a modified version the classic rubber hand experiment on octopuses, Japanese researchers Sumire Kawashima and Yuzuru Ikeda at The University of the Ryukyus have suggested octopuses may experience a sense of body ownership similar to humans. In the experiment, a partition and fake tentacle were used to cover one of the octopus’s own tentacles, then both real and fake tentacles were stimulated simultaneously. Afterward, only the fake tentacle was stimulated to see if the octopus would react as if it were its own, which it did. How about that! For reference, I have zero awareness of my own limbs and almost choked myself with my toothbrush this morning, so there’s that. YOU THINK YOU’RE BETTER THAN ME, OCTOPUS?!
